The Signal is a recurring concept in Multiversity. It represents the transmission and recognition of identity across noise, instability, distance, and uncertainty.
What Does the Signal Mean?
At its simplest, the Signal is meaningful information that survives interference. In the identity system, it is the part of a person that remains recognizable even when their environment changes.
Signal as Recognition
A Signal may be detected when a person recognizes a Mode, character, phrase, color, sigil, or artifact as unusually familiar. The recognition is not always logical first. It can feel immediate.
Signal as Transmission
Characters, artifacts, and Codex records transmit information. A signal can be carried through:
- sigils and symbols;
- character colors;
- repeated visual codes;
- messages and recovered records;
- wearable artifacts;
- digital and interactive experiences.
Signal and Noise
Noise is anything that obscures meaning: distraction, imitation, instability, incomplete records, or systems that force identity into categories that do not fit. The Signal is what remains distinguishable.
Signal Carriers
A Signal Carrier is a person, character, object, or channel capable of preserving and transmitting a meaningful identity code. The wearer of an artifact can become part of that transmission.
The Signal and the Six Modes
Each Mode expresses a different signal. The colors, sigils, language, and behavior attached to each character make those differences legible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Signal a technology?
It can appear through technology, but its meaning is broader than a device or network protocol.
Can the Signal be lost?
It can be obscured, interrupted, distorted, or misread. A central theme of Multiversity is learning to recognize it again.
