SIGNAL 001: The Rooftop That Answered - A Zane Dripwalker Story

MULTIVERSITY // RECOVERED TRANSMISSION 001 // GLITCHWAVE

Original fiction • Zane Dripwalker, the Explorer • Archive placement unconfirmed

The first sign that something was wrong was the rain. It struck the roof a second before it fell.

Zane Dripwalker stood above the city, hood drawn low, watching a sheet of water slide from an antenna rail toward the sky. For an instant the droplets hung motionless, each one holding a distorted reflection of the towers beyond.

Then they fell normally. Cars moved. A distant train crossed the elevated line. Below the roofline, the city continued as though nothing had happened.

Zane checked the receiver clipped to his sleeve. It was built to distinguish a recognizable signal from noise traveling through the Network. Tonight its screen showed only two pulses.

PULSE 02 — RECEIVED
PULSE 01 — PENDING

The second pulse had arrived first.

The second pulse arrived first.

01 / A Route That Wasn't There

He crossed to the western ledge. The receiver cleared, showing a rooftop map traced in thin cyan lines. Six distant points blinked around the city. One burned brighter than the others, directly beneath his feet.

The map should have identified his building. It did not. Its street address had been replaced by an empty square.

Zane looked over the edge. The building was still there: forty floors of glass, working elevators, maintenance lights, and the service stair he had climbed minutes earlier. Yet on the screen, the rooftop existed outside the mapped city.

He tapped the empty square. A route appeared across three roofs. The first connecting line blinked and vanished. The second remained. The third kept moving as if it could not decide where to end.

In the corner of the display, a label formed one character at a time:

ARCHIVE REF: INCOMPLETE
RECORDING TIME: NOT ASSIGNED
RECIPIENT: EXPLORER

The Archive was supposed to preserve what had already happened. This looked like a record of something that hadn't.

02 / Move Before Certainty

A red maintenance lamp on the far roof went dark. Then another. The route on the screen narrowed as each lamp disappeared, until only one cyan line remained.

Zane could have taken the stairwell back down. He could have waited for a clean transmission or an explanation from a system that refused to identify its sender.

Instead he followed the line.

Across the first roof, the city noise thinned. Across the second, the receiver began to tick in time with his footsteps, one sound ahead of every step. At the third, rain was falling normally everywhere except a rectangle of dry concrete near an abandoned antenna mount.

Four bolt holes surrounded the rectangle. Something heavy had once been fastened there. The concrete inside it was clean, as though an object had been removed only moments ago.

Zane stepped into the empty space.

Every antenna in sight turned toward him.

03 / The Unsent Reply

The receiver brightened. Its distorted waveform collapsed into a single line. For the first time that night, the display offered a readable message.

TRANSMISSION RECEIVED
SENDER: ZANE DRIPWALKER
STATUS: NEVER SENT

Zane didn't move.

The device had never left his possession. He had recorded no message. He searched the transmission history once, then again. There was no outgoing file, no copied signal, no record of an earlier connection.

Beneath the sender field, a second line began to type.

IF THE SIGNAL ANSWERS YOU,
DO NOT ANSWER IT BACK.

From the other side of the city, a cyan light flashed twice.

The second flash came first.

And somewhere beyond the rooftops, the Network waited for his reply.
