The door remembered Zane before he reached it.

On the third rooftop, the antennas were still pointed at him. His receiver repeated the warning from the unsent transmission:

IF THE SIGNAL ANSWERS YOU,
DO NOT ANSWER IT BACK.

Zane hadn't. He kept the transmitter muted. Yet the cyan route on his screen had moved again, away from the empty antenna mount and toward a service entrance at the far side of the roof.

He crossed the rain-soaked concrete. The entrance appeared abandoned: rust along its frame, a broken number plate, a keypad with no visible power. Only the narrow seam around the door was perfectly clean.

He raised his hand to the panel.

Before his glove touched the glass, the lock released.

01 / Welcome Back

A pale strip of light awakened over the keypad. An electronic voice spoke through a speaker filled with static.

WELCOME BACK, ZANE DRIPWALKER

Zane stood still. Seventeen minutes earlier he had been on the first rooftop, trying to identify the signal. He hadn't used this door. He hadn't even known it existed.

He checked his receiver's outgoing history. Empty. The door's access log, however, claimed a successful arrival under his name.

Beyond the threshold stretched a long maintenance corridor. Cyan ceiling lights followed a line of exposed pipes into the distance. Amber strips washed the metal walls, and the floor held shallow pools of water though there was no rain inside.

One set of wet boot prints ran away from the entrance. The tread looked painfully familiar.

Zane stepped through. Behind him, the door closed without a sound.

At the far end of the corridor, a second steel door stood beneath a dead security lamp. Its stencil read ROOM 03. The lock released before he touched it. Zane crossed the threshold.

02 / Seventeen Minutes Ahead

Inside Room 03, a wall monitor crackled to life. Its grainy security picture showed this same room from above. A man moved across the recording: dark cargo pants, short curled hair, a black T-shirt, and a soaked hooded jacket carried in one hand.

Zane moved closer. The man's build matched his. So did his gait. Across the shirt's back, the cyan MULTIVERSITY lettering and geometric Glitchwave sigil came into focus. The design stretched far down toward the hem.

The security monitor carried an impossible label: RECORDED 17 MIN AGO.

Zane looked down at the jacket he was still wearing. It was soaked from the rooftop. He lowered the hood, slipped out of the sleeves, and took off the jacket. Beneath it was his black Zane Mode 01 T-shirt, with the small cyan chest graphic visible.

Turning toward the wall monitor, he caught his own reflection in its dark border. The geometric back print matched the recording.

Not similar. The same placement. The same scale. Even the angle of a fold near the hem was identical.

On the screen, the recorded Zane carried his jacket in his right hand. Inside Room 03, Zane realized he'd done the same.

He switched it to his left.

The recording stuttered. For a single frame, the figure's jacket changed hands. Then the footage corrected itself.

There was no camera operator. No witness. Only the monitor trying to remember an event that Zane had not yet lived.

03 / The Playback That Knew

The surveillance footage stuttered. The Zane on the screen was already inside Room 03, at a moment before the real Zane had crossed its threshold.

Then the recorded figure lifted a hand toward the camera.

Present-day Zane stood still. He had not made that gesture. Whatever the camera had recorded knew he would be watching.

His wrist receiver vibrated once. An access record surfaced beside the playback.

ROOM 03 / ACCESS LOG
OCCUPANT: ZANE DRIPWALKER
ENTRY RECORD: NONE
EXIT RECORD: CONFIRMED

There was no entry in the log, yet the camera had seen him inside. Worse, the record marked an exit that should not have happened.

Zane watched the recorded hand remain raised. The footage was seventeen minutes old; the warning felt immediate.

Someone had been in Room 03 under Zane's name before he arrived.
